How to play

Picture tests for kids learning English

If kids are new to the topic, or if they need some help with their spelling, introduce the vocabulary by using our Vocabulary Words list before playing the game. Otherwise, they may find it quite difficult.

To start, choose the task from the menu at the top of the game board. The tasks are numbered from one to twelve, but you can choose them in random order. The selected task will be highlighted in yellow. Now you can see one word and four black and white pictures of four different words. Choose the picture that matches the word.

If you are right, the picture of the word will appear in colour and you hear the pronunciation. Also, the word will change its colour.

Then try the next task. Look at the menu. Each solved task will be marked by colouring its number in green or blue (1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 in green; 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 in blue).

Please note. This game uses HTML5 and JavaScript. It works well in modern browsers. We recommend using Google Chrome. If you can't see our games visit this site for help.

activity ideas

If your students enjoy our picture test, you could expand it (or give your students extra practice) by playing related classroom word games. Here are some ideas to inspire you. These activities can be used in any topic!

Teaching English in a fun way

Each player choose six words, then draws pictures of them on a piece of paper. Players take turns calling out a word. When a word is called out, everyone who has that word crosses it out. The first player to cross out all his/her words is the winner.

Learning English in a fun way

Describe the picture of the word and ask your students to draw it. This can also be organised as a team game, with a kid from each team coming up to the board to draw.

Classroom games ideas

Start drawing an object on the board, and after each line ask: What's this? Kids guess what it is. The first person to guess correctly has to spell the word correctly to gain the point, otherwise the point goes to the opposing team.
