The substance used to make something is called a material. For example, your school desk may be made from wood, plastic, or metal, or a mixture of all three materials. Materials may be natural or artificial. They have certain qualities, or properties, such as strength, colour, and hardness. They may be soft, hard, or flexible. For example, glass is a transparent, hard, and smooth material.
