  • Have them spell the word aloud or write it down to practise correct spelling.
02

Alphabetical Chaos

  • Write a list of your current vocabulary or grammar words on the board.
  • Ask the kids to rearrange and write the letters of each word in alphabetical order.
  • For example, the word DOG becomes DGO, creating a fun puzzle for the whole class.
03

Back Writing Guess

  • Write your vocabulary words on the board.
  • Have pupils play in pairs, with each player secretly choosing 2-4 words from the board.
  • Ask Player A to sit with their back turned towards Player B.
  • Have Player B trace a chosen word with their finger on Player A's back for them to guess.
  • Once Player A guesses the word correctly, have the pupils swap roles.
04

Write the Words

  • Write five vocabulary words from the same topic on the board.
  • Give the pupils some time to memorise the words, then erase everything from the board.
  • Ask your students to work individually or in pairs to write the correct spelling of the words in their notebooks.
  • The student or pair who completes this in the shortest time wins.
05

Misspelt Words

  • Divide the class into two or more teams.
  • Slowly write a list of vocabulary words on the board, purposely misspelling random words.
  • Instruct pupils that as soon as a team notices a word has been misspelt, one person should stand up and call out: 'That's wrong!'
  • If the word is indeed incorrect, the team must spell it correctly to earn a point.
  • If they cannot spell it correctly, give another team the chance to spell the word and steal the point.
  • The team with the most points at the end of the game wins.
06

Draw and Guess

  • Divide your students into two teams.
  • Invite one pupil from each team to the board to draw a vocabulary word at the same time.
  • Award a point to the first team to guess the word correctly.
  • To increase the difficulty for easier words, set a strict time limit for drawing or guessing.
07

What's This?

  • Start drawing a vocabulary item on the board line by line.
  • After adding each new line, ask the class: 'What's this?'
  • Encourage your pupils to guess what the drawing represents.
  • The first student to guess the word correctly wins the round and can come to the board to draw the next picture.
08

Guess and Spell

  • Divide the class into two teams.
  • Show a flashcard or picture to the first team and ask one member to say the word for one point.
  • Ask the same pupil to spell the word correctly to earn an additional point for their team.
  • If they cannot spell it, allow the opposing team to try and steal a bonus point.
09

Draw It

  • Describe a picture of a vocabulary word and ask your students to draw it based on your description.
  • Alternatively, organise this as a team game with a pupil from each team coming up to the board to draw at the same time.
  • The rest of the team members must guess the word from the drawing to score a point.
10

Across or Down

  • Provide your students with copies of a crossword puzzle to look at.
  • Invite one pupil to choose the longest word from the list and write it vertically on the board in capital letters, from top to bottom.
  • Have the other pupils come up to the board one by one to add different words from the list, connecting them across or down just like in a crossword puzzle.
11

Circle the Words

  • Write your vocabulary words on the board, scattering them all over in no particular order.
  • Divide the class into two teams and give a piece of chalk or a marker to a pupil from each team.
  • Read out the definition or translation of a vocabulary word.
  • The first pupil to find and circle the correct word on the board wins a point for their team.
12

Noughts and Crosses

  • Draw a Noughts and Crosses grid on the board, placing a vocabulary word or picture inside each box.
  • Divide the class into two teams: Team A plays with crosses (X) and Team B plays with noughts (O).
  • Have Team A choose a box and say the definition or translation of the corresponding word.
  • If correct, rub out the word and write an X in the box; if wrong, allow Team B to steal the box with a correct guess, otherwise it remains open.
  • Alternate turns between the teams until one team successfully completes a line of three in any direction to win.
13

Memorise the Words

  • Divide the class into two teams.
  • Write a list of vocabulary words on the board and give your students a few moments to study them.
  • Rub out all the words from the board completely.
  • Have the teams take turns to recall and call out one word from the list; if they are correct, award a point to their team.
14

Spell the Words

  • Divide the class into two teams.
  • Invite one member from each team to come to the board at the same time.
  • Have them take turns to challenge each other by saying a vocabulary word for the opponent to write on the board.
  • Encourage the rest of the class to check and correct any mistakes.
  • Award a point to the team for each correctly-written word, and deduct a point for a wrongly-spelt word.
15

Cross the Words

  • Write the vocabulary words on the board before starting the game.
  • Ask each pupil to choose five of these words and write them down or draw their corresponding pictures.
  • Read out the words from the board in a random, mixed-up order.
  • When pupils hear a word they have chosen, they cross it out on their list; the first player to cross out all five of their words wins.
16

Vanishing Words

  • Divide the pupils into two teams, with each team forming a line leading up to the board.
  • Write two separate columns of vocabulary words on the board—one for each team.
  • Have the first pupil from each team run up to the board, point to the first word in their column, and read it aloud.
  • If the pupil reads the word correctly, they rub it out to make it vanish, then move to the back of their team's line.
  • The first team to successfully make all the words in their column disappear wins the game.
17

Match and Snatch

  • Lay out a set of vocabulary flashcards face down on the table or attach them to the board, creating matching pairs.
  • Have pupils take turns to flip over two cards at a time, reading the words or naming the pictures aloud.
  • If the cards match, the pupil keeps the pair and gets another turn to find a match.
  • If the cards do not match, they are flipped face down again in the same positions, and the turn passes to the next player.
  • The player or team with the most matching sets at the end of the game wins.
18

Snap Attack!

  • Print two to four duplicate sets of vocabulary flashcards, shuffle them well, and deal them out evenly to all players.
  • Have pupils take turns to quickly flip over their top card, naming the word or picture aloud before placing it in the central pile.
  • If a flipped card matches the one directly beneath it, the first pupil to shout "Snap!" and slap the pile wins all the cards in the middle.
  • Players are eliminated once they run out of cards.
  • Continue play until one sharp-eyed player manages to collect all the cards to win the game.
19

Silent Stars

  • Place the vocabulary flashcards face down in a central pile on the table or floor.
  • Have one pupil draw the top card without showing it to anyone else.
  • The pupil must act out the word using gestures and body language, without making a single sound.
  • The first classmate to successfully guess the word wins a point and steps up to be the next actor.
20

The Big Race

  • Stick several flashcards in a row across the board.
  • Divide the class into two teams.
  • Call out one of the vocabulary words.
  • The first pupil to run up and touch the correct flashcard wins a point for their team.
21

Missing Cards

  • Place four vocabulary flashcards face up on the table or board in front of the pupils.
  • Give them a few moments to memorise the pictures or words, then ask them to close their eyes.
  • Remove one of the flashcards from the row.
  • Tell the pupils to open their eyes, and the first one to correctly name the missing card gets to choose and hide a card in the next round.
22

Hot Potato

  • Invite the pupils to sit in a large circle.
  • Give four or five pupils a vocabulary flashcard each and have them pass the cards around the circle while music plays.
  • When the music stops, the passing must freeze instantly.
  • Each pupil holding a flashcard at that moment must loudly and correctly name the vocabulary word on their card.
23

Card Race

  • Arrange the vocabulary flashcards in a long, winding line on the floor to create a game track with clear starting and finishing points.
  • Give each pupil a counter or small object to use as their playing piece.
  • The first pupil rolls a die and moves their counter along the track according to the number rolled.
  • The pupil must loudly name the vocabulary word on the flashcard they land on; if they make a mistake, they must return to their previous space.
  • Mix special wild cards into the track (such as 'Go Back One Space' or 'Roll Again') to make the race even more exciting.
24

Missing Letters

  • Write the vocabulary words in large capital letters across the board, leaving one letter blank in each word.
  • Ask the pupils to look closely and complete the words by identifying and writing down the missing letters.
  • This activity can be played individually, in small groups, or as a whole class challenge.
  • To increase the excitement and difficulty, you can introduce a strict time limit for the pupils to guess all the words.
25

Mystery Words

  • Write a few shortened words on the board – the easiest way is to hide all the vowels, for example: L V S for leaves, C R N for acorns, or M B R L for umbrella.
  • Ask the pupils the key question: "What mystery word is hiding in these letters?"
  • Give the pupils copies of a worksheet with a wordlist and ask them to look at it to help them guess.
  • The first pupil to correctly guess and call out the hidden words wins the round.
26

Flower Power

  • This is a version of Hangman. Choose a vocabulary word, write a dash on the board for each letter, and next to them draw a simple flower with five distinct petals.
  • Ask the pupils to guess the letters one by one to uncover the hidden word.
  • If a pupil guesses correctly, write the letter in the appropriate space and give them another turn to guess.
  • If the guess is incorrect, erase one petal from the flower and move to the next pupil.
  • The pupil who successfully guesses the whole word wins the round and gets to choose the next word for the class.
27

Name the Words

  • Use a set of vocabulary flashcards for this quick-fire activity.
  • Hold up or point to the pictures one by one, asking the pupils to name them all together in chorus.
  • Repeat the process, but this time ask individual pupils to call out the correct words.
  • Go faster and faster with each round to challenge the pupils' reflexes and keep the energy high.
28

Crazy Colours

  • Distribute thematic colouring worksheets containing outline drawings of the vocabulary words.
  • Give clear instructions to the pupils, for example: "The ball is red. The kite is blue."
  • The pupils listen carefully to your descriptions and colour the specific objects in the correct colours.
  • Once finished, let the pupils compare their completed pictures in pairs to check their work.
29

Word Catchers

  • Write the vocabulary words clearly across the board as a reference guide.
  • Hold up or point to your flashcards one by one and loudly name each picture, for example: "an umbrella", "an acorn".
  • Ask the pupils to quickly take out a piece of paper and write down each word as you point to its corresponding flashcard.
  • To add excitement, you can turn it into a race to see who can neatly and correctly write down all the words first.
30

Speed Draw

  • Divide the students into two teams.
  • Invite the first student from each team to come up to the board and secretly whisper a vocabulary word to them.
  • On the count of three, both students start drawing the word as fast as they can.
  • The first team to correctly guess their drawer's word wins a point for the round.
31

Picture Snatch

  • Place a selection of vocabulary flashcards clearly on the board or wall.
  • Divide the kids into two teams, with each team forming a straight line.
  • Call out a word that matches one of the pictures on the board.
  • The first child from each team runs up, takes the correct picture, and then moves to the back of their line.
  • Teams score one point for each correct picture taken, and the group with the most points wins.
32

Anagram Hunt

  • Write one long vocabulary word in large letters on the board, for example: "ELEPHANT".
  • Challenge teams or individual pupils to make as many smaller words as possible using only the letters from the main word.
  • Give them a strict time limit to find words, such as "ant", "net", "pet", or "help".
  • The player or team that writes down the highest number of correct words wins the game.
33

First Letter Hints

  • Write a list of current vocabulary words on the board and give the pupils a few moments to memorise them.
  • Erase all the words completely, leaving only the very first letter of each word on the board as a hint.
  • Ask the pupils to work quickly in their notebooks to reconstruct and write down the full list from memory.
  • The first pupil to finish writing all the words with the correct spelling wins the challenge.
34

Whisper Train

  • Divide the pupils into two teams, with each team forming a single line facing the board.
  • Whisper a different vocabulary word to the last pupil in each line.
  • Pupils must whisper the word down their line from person to person as quickly as possible.
  • The first pupil at the front of the line runs to the board, writes the word down with correct spelling, and scores a point for their team.
